Nothing is more exciting than going to a flea market or a thrift store and spotting an old, dusty sewing machine on the shelf. These old, all-metal machines are so hearty and last lifetimes. I collect because of the enjoyment I get out of tinkering with a new machine. I like learning what different features on different machines do. A few months ago I found a beautiful Singer G 13 sewing machine in a Goodwill. It was missing the power cord and foot pedal, but I was so excited I bought it anyway.
When I got it home and finally started to take a look at everything I had, I was surprised to find out my machine was made in Germany. The instruction manual I found was completley in German, and totally ineffective. I managed through some Googling to find a manual in English, but I still had a question: how old was my machine? Singer , the manufacturer of my machine, has a lot of great resources for use on their website.

These machines are all fundamentally the same with some small differences. The A and the A are the same machine but with cosmetic updates on the A. The same is true of the A and the A or as in the case of the I have here — the J. The same machine but for the cosmetic differences. This means that it does stitches without the use of fashion cams. The A and the A both need cams to stitch out anything other than a straight stitch.
That being said, with a little care you should never have to worry about a cam stack and its various linkages gumming up, so the machines with the built-in cam stacks are excellent machines to grab if you find them for sale. Additionally, the G and the G can chainstitch as well as lockstitch. The G and the G are treadle ready. The G and the G are both open arm machines. I also heartily recommend Tri-Flow oil as being the lubricant of choice here.
Sewing machine oil has never done for me what Tri-Flow does with a sorely neglected cam machine.

I’ve been meaning to get the sewing room organized, but it hasn’t been a high priority. There’s a mediocre newish early ‘s sewing machine in a cabinet that it sorta fit in, the solid metal 70’s Kenmore that didn’t have a cabinet, a solid White treadle and a few other sewing machines here and there although they need refurbishing or repair before they’d be useful. Then Saturday came along and there was an estate sale.
A nice unassuming black box followed me home and events from that has changed a lot of things. Nice black box, couple of silver hasps, a handle and it doesn’t weigh that much either.

I’ve had one of these since and have sewn hundreds and hundreds of items on it. It’s a real workhorse. The only thing it’s not great on is slippery knits so I pull out my little basic Brother machine for those. I trust the grandaughter will enjoy using it. This is one of my favorite Singer machines. The other one I love is the , which only stitches a straight stitch.

The important ladies in my life knew how to stitch and passed their love of stitching and knowledge onto me. My Mother knew how to fashion home decor items and clothing for kids and adults. My Grandmother spent many years working in Silk-o-Lina, a ladies wear, sewing goods and alterations store. She was well trained and practised with a sewing machine and thread. My favourite aunt knew how to turn fabric into dolls and toys that I still cherish today.
I am indebted to these talented ladies for sharing their knowledge and their patience as I learned the skills of the trade. When things get crazy and the chaos of life creeps in, I pull out yarn and needles or dig into my fabric stash for something that inspires me to stitch up a skirt, a pillow, or a nifty new bag. Only once in my stitching career have I owned a brand new machine.
It was an entry level Pfaff that served me well for ten years. Sadly, the transmission blew and it was quickly shipped off to the sewing machine graveyard. My Mom, an expert bargain hunter, found an old Baycrest branded Riccar circa early s sewing machine to replace the Pfaff. Little did I know that this solution would lead to a lifelong love of vintage sewing machines.
The offerings are shiny and new, but complicated and difficult to work with. They are built with plastic and thin metal-like substances.
